Case Study · 2015 – 2019
A global pitch series bridging food-tech founders and the corporate/investor networks that could actually deploy them. Acquired by Rabobank.
In the mid-2010s, food-tech was a real category with a real problem: the founders building it were mostly outside the traditional venture and corporate networks that could scale it. Grocery buyers, ingredient specialists, food-service operators, agtech investors — the audience that could deploy these products — had no reliable way to meet the founders producing them.
FoodBytes was a curated live pitch series: ten to twelve founders selected from thousands of applicants, presenting to a room of corporate innovation heads, investors, and industry press. Each event traveled to a different city and repositioned the local food-tech ecosystem toward global buyers.
Category creation via curated live events. The format itself was the IP.

RabobankAcquired 2019 — format still runs
Two lessons from FoodBytes have shown up in every category-creation engagement since. First: the format itself is the strategic asset. A well-designed recurring event with a real curation bar becomes a durable market artifact that a corporate acquirer will pay for. Second: the audience mix matters more than the audience size. Ten of the right corporate innovation heads in one room is worth more than three hundred generalists.
The FoodBytes acquisition was the moment I understood that live event formats aren’t just marketing spend — they can be durable commercialization infrastructure that a serious buyer will value on the balance sheet.
