$5 of Electricity. A 25,000-Pound Airplane. The Number Is Not the Story.

Heart Aerospace says its X1 demonstrator used about $5 worth of electricity during its first flight. That is a fantastic headline, but it is not yet an operating-cost model. The more useful numbers are what the aircraft actually did: 27 minutes in the air, more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff, more than one megawatt of electric propulsion, roughly 1,100 feet above the ground, and all of it under an FAA experimental airworthiness certificate.

The accomplishment is not that electricity was cheap for 27 minutes. It is that Heart designed, built, integrated, approved and flew an electric demonstrator at a scale much closer to commercial regional aviation than most battery-electric aircraft programs have yet reached. X1 is proof of capability; the ES-30 still has to become the product. Reaching that milestone means certification, production, dispatch reliability, battery replacement economics, payload-range tradeoffs, airline integration and a business case that works well beyond the cost of the electrons. The $5 number gets attention, but the 25,000-pound airplane is the story.
